In 2010 the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Paul Hamlyn Foundation supported The Poetry Society to undertake a research programme looking at improving the standards of poetry teaching in primary schools.
Poetry Train worked with student teachers at Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln and Roehampton University.
In 2013, independent research into the programme by the National Foundation for Educational Research, found:
“Student teachers who participated in Poetry Train demonstrated significantly greater
improvement in knowledge of and enthusiasm for poetry, confidence in teaching poetry, and acquisition of teaching skills than a comparison group.”
Off the back of this work The Poetry Society published a teachers resource. Written by poets David Harmer and Roger Stevens, who had worked on the teacher training intervention, this 32-page booklet is full of practical activities for primary school teachers to apply the learning from the Poetry Train programme.
The resource is free to download below, or you can request copies for your school or teacher training institution.
The Poetry Society runs bespoke INSET and teacher training packages, based on our Poetry Train work. For more information, please contact our Poets in Schools team.
