Kathleen Jamie has chosen her winners of the Nature and Place Poetry Competition organised by The Rialto, with Poetry Society Member Jemma Borg coming out on top. In 2016, Jane won The Stare’s Nest’s Fledgling Award, was longlisted for the Winchester Poetry Prize, and was a finalist in Mslexia‘s poetry competition.
Fellow Poetry Society Member Martin Figura was second. Martin is a former winner of The Poetry Society’s Hamish Canham Prize for best poem in Poetry News.
Other Poetry Society Members fared well too, with an additional prize going to Sue Norton, and Ellie Rees and Jane McCarthy Wilkinson being Highly Commended.
1st Prize of £1000 – ‘Marsh thistle’ by Jemma Borg
2nd Prize of £500 – ‘Harold Wilson Rows Towards Bishop Rock’ by Martin Figura
3rd Prize of A place on a creative writing course at Ty Newydd– ‘Habitats’ by Polly Atkin
Additional Prize of a personal tour with Mark Cocker of his most cherished wildlife places in East Anglia – ‘Have I already told you this?’ by Sophie F Baker
Additional Prize of a personal tour with Nick Davies of Wicken Fen – ‘The Golden Panamanian Frog Waves To Us’ by Sue Norton
The five prize winning poems will be published in issue 89 of The Rialto.
