Sheffield Poem-a-Thon raises over £14,000 for refugee charity

A Poem-a-Thon held in Sheffield in April has raised over £14,000 for refugees and asylum seekers. 48 poets, including Helen Mort, Ruby Robinson, Kathy Towers, Seni Seneviratne, and Sally Goldsmith, read for eight minutes each and were individually sponsored, ending up with a total that was nearly three times the original target. The donations go to ASSIST Sheffield who support failed asylum seekers who are not allowed to work, register as homeless or to be placed in local authority night shelters. Many become destitute, struggling for food, clothes and accommodation. ASSIST said they have never had such a successful fundraising project raising money for them. You can still donate to the charity via their Just Giving page. The full details of poets who participated can be found on Facebook.
