York with Carole Bromley

Due to recent illness Carole Bromley is not offering Poetry surgeries at York Explore in 2018. She is, however, happy to see poets individually at her home in York or at a cafe in central York on the usual terms. If you are interested please ask Paul McGrane for details: 020 7420 9881 or membership @ poetrysociety.org.uk

This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss your poetry on a one-to-one basis with poet and tutor Carole Bromley, a relaxed but in-depth analysis of your poems. Identify strategies for further developing your writing, discuss problems you may be experiencing and look at strategies for taking your work forward. There will be plenty of time to talk about all those things you need to know about writing, revising and submitting your work.

Surgeries take place at York Explore, Library Square, Museum Street, York,  YO1, which is 5 minutes walk from the station and 1 minute from The Minster. Library Square is well served by buses and there are several car-parks nearby. York Explore also has a very nice cafe.

£45 for Poetry Society members, £55 for non-members. Book online or call Paul McGrane on 020 7420 9881. Once your session is booked, you will be asked to send up to 6 poems, or 150 lines maximum, in advance, so that Carole has sufficient time to read your poems beforehand. The one-hour sessions are at 10am, 11.15am, 1pm, and 2.15pm.

Feedback from Carole’s sessions

Carole’s feedback was excellent – thorough, perceptive, supportive, constructive, comprehensive. She had really studied the draft poems and thought about what (and what not) to comment on. She was also very good in the actual one-to-one session itself, listening carefully and thinking of issues from my perspective as a writer. I much hope The Poetry Society facilitates her to do this review service again. I will definitely sign up for it. WK

Saturday’s Surgery was very valuable. I intended to do a ‘stock take’ of my poetry writing this autumn and the opportunity to base this on a session at a poetry clinic was very valuable. The discussions about the poems I submitted were very valuable. I knew they would be. Technique, punctuation, stanza breaks, spelling (I’m afraid so) were all rigorously addressed. Thank you – very helpful. RK

I found the session with Carole very helpful. It was in fact just what I and my writing needed, positively critical and hugely supportive with suggestion I had not considered. I am still buzzing with it. It was for me very good value indeed. I would recommend it to friends who are serious in their writing. RS
