Art Russe: The Art of Storytelling

Vasnetsov Viktor Mikhailovich, Flying Carpet. (1880)

In a cultural partnership with Art Russe, The Poetry Society has commissioned seven poets to create new works, inspired by seven paintings from one of the world’s leading collections of Soviet and Russian art.

The newly commissioned poems are displayed in the exhibition Art Russe: The Art of Storytelling which explores themes of storytelling and folk tales in Russian art from the late 19th and early 20th century.

The exhibition works to bring Russian and Soviet culture to a wider audience – other partners in this project include children’s charities Children & The Arts and The Naked Heart Foundation, using visual storytelling to engage and support children from hard to reach areas here in the UK and in Russia.

The commissioned poets are:

Tara Bergin (Ireland)

Sujata Bhatt (India/Germany)

Doireann Ní Ghríofa (Ireland)

AB Jackson (Scotland)

Pascale Petit (UK/ France)

Ruby Robinson (UK)

Matthew Sweeney (Ireland)

Art Russe and The Poetry Society have also developed an educational project with 300 children from London state schools taking part in poetry workshops.

The exhibition runs from 21 December 2016 to 6 January 2017, at The Mall Galleries, London. For opening times to the public, please see the exhibition’s page on The Mall Gallery’s website.
