National Poetry Day in 2015 was on 8 October, and the theme was Light.
National Poetry Day Live
The Poetry Society and Southbank Centre once again assembled a team of Young Producers aged 18-25 who curated a day of illuminating poetry readings, workshops and installations, featuring performances from some of the UK’s biggest and newest talents in poetry and spoken word, including Karen McCarthy Woolf, Michael Symmons Roberts, Rachel Rooney, John Hegley, and many more.
Beginning to See the Light
Working with Jaybird Live Literature, there was also a special evening event featuring new work by a range of contemporary poets who examined what’s illuminated and what stays in the shadows. The event featured newly-commissioned pieces from Raymond Antrobus, Malika Booker, Holly Corfield Carr, Jane Draycott, Caleb Klaces and Richard Price, and combined them with some classic light poems into a sell out show. New poetry films have been made by Corinne Silva, featuring the commissioned poems, and a pocket version of the show which will go on tour in Spring 2016.
Poetry at Covent Garden
There was also a free outdoor open mic at the London Transport Museum, online poems and activities to follow all day long, plus a special collaboration with Transport for London, featuring poems at Covent Garden and Oval stations on the London Underground.
