Last Poet Standing

Joelle Taylor is a poet, playwright and spoken word artist, as well as the artistic director of SLAMbassadors UK, the national youth poetry slam.

‘Last Poet Standing’ is inspired by her work with young people since 2001. This has often involved working with young people who are associated with knife crime or gangs. Most famously one young poet Joelle worked with turned his back on gangs to set up his own charity, for which he was awarded an OBE.

In this poem Joelle uses lots of metaphor in her poems to create powerful images such as showing tower blocks as gravestones. Her poem ‘Crystal Kisses’ uses similar techniques to talk about the lives of young people, in a similarly magical version of the inner city.
