Welcome to In Town Tonight, the reading series where The Poetry Society invites a visiting poet to perform alongside a guest writer of their choice.
Leah Umansky chose Ruth Padel to be her reading partner tonight – both are authors of new books, and share an interest in the stories that inform us and the stories we tell ourselves.
Leah Umansky is the author of The Barbarous Century (Eyewear 2018), among others. She earned her MFA in Poetry at Sarah Lawrence College and is the curator and host of The COUPLET Reading Series in New York City. Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in such places as POETRY, Guernica, The New York Times, Pleiades, Salamander, and the anthologies, The Eloquent Poem (Persea Books) and Misrepresented Peoples (NYQ Books). She is #teamkhaleesi & #teammaeve
Ruth Padel is an award-winning British poet and writer. She is Professor of Poetry at King’s College London where she teaches Poetry and Drama for the Creative Writing team of the Department of English. Her new book, Emerald (Penguin 2018), is a grief observed: an elegy for her mother on her death at the age of ninety-seven. Ruth’s other books, include ten poetry collections, Where the Serpent Lives, a novel on wildlife crime, and eight books of non-fiction: including I’m A Man: Sex, Gods and Rock ‘n’ Roll on rock music and Greek myths, Tigers in Red Weather a memoir on frontline tiger conservation in Asian forests, and The Poem and the Journey on reading contemporary poems.
We’ll be gathering at 7pm for drinks and mingling, and the readings will begin at 7.30pm.
