Laura Scott, So Many Rooms: Carcanet Book Launch

Wednesday 2 October 2019, 7:00 pm10:00 pm

Please join us to celebrate the London launch of Laura Scott’s debut collection, So Many Rooms, with an evening of celebratory readings and discussion. Laura will discuss the inspirations behind the book, and there will be the opportunity to ask questions. The Café’s bar will be open for refreshments, and copies of the book will be available to buy. Please let us know you can make it by reserving a free Eventbrite ticket.

Laura Scott’s debut collection, So Many Rooms, moves with its own lyric strangeness, opening up different rooms and different worlds. Years scream themselves out of the walls, daughters dart in and out of imaginary bedrooms, chandeliers rip plaster from the ceiling – all seen with a minute attention that can shade into visionary apprehension without losing its clarity. The house is full of sounds and traces of the past: regrets curl around bannister scrolls; bowls smash themselves into new patterns on the floor. Language lingers in the places where the carpet has worn away, and there are fragments from other worlds – songs, photographs, paintings, a statue of a Greek god, a character from Tolstoy who goes to the window ‘to look at how the moon turns half a row of trees silver, leaves the other half black’.

Laura Scott was born in London and now lives in Norwich. Her pamphlet, What I Saw, won the Michael Marks Prize in 2014, and in 2015 she won the Geoffrey Dearmer Prize. Her poems have appeared in various magazines including PN Review, Oxford Poetry and Poetry Review, and a selection of her work was featured in Carcanet’s New Poetries VII in 2018.

The event will begin at 19:00 and include readings a reading, followed by a discussion with the opportunity to ask questions. Tickets are free but please reserve them here. There is also a Facebook event. For any enquiries about the event please email [email protected].

Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult.
