Out-Spoken are hosting a special one-off Poetry Masterclass with acclaimed US poet Fatimah Asghar. The session will explore the theme of self-love, using poems and inspirations from Frank O’Hara, Ocean Vuong and Roger Reeves .
The class is open to members of the public of all ages and abilities – from beginner to the more advanced. The intention is to give anyone with an interest in poetry the chance to work with the country’s most revered writers’ while learning some of their methods and approaches to crafting beautiful and original poetry.
About Fatimah Asghar
Fatimah Asghar is a nationally touring poet, performer, educator, and writer. Her work has appeared in POETRY Magazine, BuzzFeed Reader, Academy of American Poets and has been featured on news outlets like PBS, TIME, NBC, Teen Vogue, and Huffington Post. In 2011, she created REFLEKS, a Spoken Word Poetry group in Bosnia and Herzegovina while on a Fulbright studying theater in post-genocidal countries. She is a member of the Dark Noise collective and a Kundiman Fellow.
Her chapbook After was released on Yes Yes Books fall 2015. She is the writer of Brown Girls, an Emmy-nominated web series that highlights a friendship between women of color. In 2017 she was the recipient of a Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation and was on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Her debut collection of poems If They Come For Us is published in February 2019 on One World/ Random House.
Participants are expected to bring their own writing utensils, a notepad/tablet/laptop.
