‘Stand By Your Nan’ is an Arts Council funded show and storytelling participatory experience about Rachel Sambrooks’ grandmother and yours.
Often unsung stories, grandmothers give us a perspective on the timeline of life that is rarely honoured. This show is full of poems, humour and stories all about my Nan’s story, with sharing of others.
Turning memories into stories and poems, about the unforgettable & unsung women in our lives and keeping their stories alive, exploring where we came from, and how those women contributed to who we are today.
My Nan, Eve Hind, was the original Educating Rita who pretended to be an ordinary working class housewife whilst she dreamed of greater things, became a new age pioneer on strange spiritual quests and as a lifelong learner, became a fine art graduate in her 80s.
Quotes from audience:
‘A wonderful series of poetry, narrative and wit that will acquaint you with Eve and make you think of your own grandmother’
‘powerful and evocative performance piece which brought Rachel’s grandmother to life and reminded me of the importance of honouring our heritage and the female principle’
‘Stand By Your Nan’ is written and performed by Rachel Sambrooks with an attached poetry collection.
