A new film & more for World Poetry Day

Saturday 21 March was World Poetry Day, which The Poetry Society celebrated with the premiere of a brand new National Poetry Competition filmpoem. We’re also spotlighting some of the many fantastic poems published by poets internationally.

Director Aindri C has made a dramatic animated version of Mark Fiddes’s poem ‘Polite Safety Notice’. This poem came third in last year’s National Poetry Competition, and the film uses an animation process inspired by the ecological themes of the poem itself – a monoprint using textures from non-biodegradable objects such as polythene bags and straws. It’s best to see it for yourself, which you can do right here.

Young Poets Network, our platform for writers aged up to the age of 25, attracts poets from all over the world. Today we’re highlighting three poems by international poets which we’ve published through our various YPN writing challenges and prizes. They are  ‘The page is also the night where I climb out of’ by Duy Quang Mai, ‘Aria for the dead ones’ by Peter LaBerge, and ‘Make Abstinence Great Again’ by Alara Egi. Give them a read, and explore the site for more.

We’ve just published Your Voice Crosses the Ocean, a free online anthology drawn from last year’s Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award.  We’d like to highlight a few of the poems by international Foylers for World Poetry Day. You’ll be able to find them in the free online commended anthology here. There’s also a shorter anthology of the Top 15 winning poems.
