Yvonne Reddick wins Ambit Poetry Competition

Yvonne Reddick & Jane Lovell

Congratulations to Poetry Society Member Yvonne Reddick, this year’s winner of the Ambit Poetry Competition on the theme of ‘Wild’ and judged by Liz Berry. Yvonne wins £500 for her poem ‘In the Burning Season’ which will be published in Ambit 238 with the rest of the top three poems. Yvonne was Joint runner-up in the Magma Editors’ Prize last year, and was also a Creative Future Writers’ Platinum Award winner.

In second place is fellow Poetry Society Member Jane Lovell, who wins £250 for her poem ‘Night Fox with Stars’. Jane was this year’s winner of the Poetry Book Society/Mslexia Women’s Poetry Pamphlet Prize. Third prize goes to former Foyle Young Poet winner Ella Duffy, who wins £100 for ‘Halves’.

Poetry Society Members Susan E Holland (‘Random Statement’) and Helen Overell (‘Rose Garden, Polesden Lacey’) were Commended and Yvonne also had a second poem Commended – ‘High Low’.

Liz Berry said of Yvonne’s winning poem:

‘I was captivated by this wild fiery folkloric poem. I loved its dark, scorching story, its odd sensuality, and the way it holds just the right balance of lyrical detail and narrative. The voice is wonderful and those last taut lines send us back into the poem and the story again and again, finding new things each time. I wished it was mine!’

Well done to everyone!
