We are delighted to announce the winners of the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2018. From nearly 6,000 poets and 11,000 poems, the top 15 and 85 commended poets have now been selected and we can’t wait to celebrate them in the weeks, months and years to come.
Judges Daljit Nagra and Caroline Bird (herself a former winner) had a tough job picking the top 100 from such a range of poems. Caroline Bird has said, “The poems that embedded themselves in my mind were those with a strong, original idea. They jumped out because they felt new and vivid; cinematic and alive, like they weren’t documented on the page they were occurring on the page. I can still see the images in my head. Imagining grief as a polar bear that follows you everywhere. A nudist beach. A tree growing inside you.”
Daljit Nagra, meanwhile, was “impressed by the maturity of the work we read; so many of our young poets showed a keen awareness of serious issues such as identity politics, environment issues and the global tensions currently between nation states.”
They announced the winning poets at a ceremony at Southbank Centre, attended by VIP guests, press, parents and established poets. The top 15 poets who were able to attend read their winning poems to an excited room. The forthcoming Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2018 anthology will see the winning poets in print, and the 85 commended poems will be published in an online anthology in spring next year.
This year is the 20th anniversary of the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award. Find out about all our activities on our Foyle 20 page.
