John Murphy wins Strokestown International Prize

Poetry Society Member John Murphy (Ireland) has won the 2016 Strokestown International Prize for his poem ‘As if she were close’. Second was former National Poetry Competition winner Beatrice Garland, and third was Jed Myers, third in last year’s 3rd in Kent and Sussex Poetry Competition.

Among the shortlisted poets were Poetry Society Members Pat Borthwick (Yorkshire), Jane Kirwan (London), and Christopher North (Spain).

The Strokestown International Poetry Festival was founded in 1999 and is the longest running poetry festival in Ireland. It takes place annually on the first weekend of May, in Strokestown, Co. Roscommon.
