Pet Poet Laureate – is it you?

An amazing opportunity from Blue Cross popped into The Poetry Society inbox today. The animal charity is on the look-out for a Pet Poet Laureate – an emerging poet who has a little bit of experience of publishing and performing, and is keen to develop their skills amongst the UK’s cats, dogs and assorted furries and scaleys. The Blue Cross is keen to harness the power of poetry to connect with young people and the pets which enrich our lives. Here’s what they have to say…

‘The chosen Pet Poet Laureate would hold the position for a year and produce up to 10 poems across this time; all of which would be performed, recorded and posted on the Blue Cross website. The role will be remunerated and provides the opportunity to write about diverse content that may be published in some of the UK’s largest national newspapers as well as radio stations across the country.

How to apply

Applications must include:

  • An audition video (can be filmed on phone) with you reading out an original work
  • Written examples of previous work
  • A 250 word statement or cover letter alongside, detailing why you should be considered for this exciting new role

Any links to blogs / published work and social media handles are also welcomed. If you would like to write a new piece of work inspired by pets that that would be wonderful, but not an essential requirement!

Entries are to be submitted to [email protected] by 18 July, titled: ‘Entry – *Your Name*’.

The finalist will then be chosen by a specialist judging panel and notified before their role begins.
