Cindy Botha wins Rialto Nature and Place Poetry Competition

Cindy Botha

‘Hermit Crab in a Doll’s Head’ by Poetry Society Member Cindy Botha is the winner of this year’s Rialto Nature and Place Poetry Competition judged by Pascale Petit. Fellow Society Members Jo Peters and Jemma Borg were Highly Commended.

Cindy Botha began writing poetry in late 2017 as a relief from being sole-carer for her mother, a dementia-sufferer. With no poetry community nearby, she resorted to online courses for guidance, largely the Poetry School, and has become an insatiable devourer of poetry books. First published in 2019, her work now appears in the Poetry New Zealand Yearbook, takahē and Landfall (NZ), Eyeflash and Obsessed With Pipework (UK) and Poetics for the More-than-Human World Anthology (USA).

The top four prize winning poems will be published in issue 94 of The Rialto. An online event that will feature a reading by Pascale Petit and all the winners is being planned for 24 September. The Rialto magazine is edited by Michael Mackmin working with Rishi Dastidar, Edward Doegar, Will Harris and Degna Stone, who are graduates of their Editor Development Programme.
