Sarah James wins Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival competition

CONGRATULATIONS to Poetry Society Member (and Worcestershire Stanza rep) Sarah James for winning the Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival competition judged by Jane Draycott. Sarah’s poem is entitled ‘Quiet Curves’. Sarah is a poet, fiction writer, journalist, occasional playwright, photographer, poetryfilm maker and arts reviewer, as well as editor at V. Press. Author of four poetry collections, three poetry pamphlets, a poetry-play and two novellas, she also enjoys artistic commissions, mentoring and working as a writer in residence, and was delighted to be The High Window Resident Artist for 2019.

Society Members Estelle Price (‘Daughters’) and Alison Riley (‘The Snowdrops are out in the Park’) were given Special Mentions and John Wheeler (‘The Hungerford Line’) and Dominic Fisher (‘For deliverance from snowdrops’) were Highly Commended.

Fellow Poetry Society Member Anya Trofimova won in the 12-17 age group for ‘about the rebirth’. Anya was Commended in the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2019.

The theme of the competition was ‘snowdrops’.

The poems will be posted on the Festival website after the readings & prize-giving ceremony on Saturday 15 February in the Parish Church of St Peter & St Paul in the centre of Shepton Mallet. An anthology of the shortlisted poems will also be available at the festival. You can book tickets for free on the festival site.
