Congratulations to all the poets shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize 2018.
The shortlist includes debuts by Zaffar Kunial, Fiona Moore, Phoebe Power, Richard Scott and Hannah Sullivan, alongside collections by Ailbhe Darcy, Nick Laird and Sean O’Brien, and American poets Terrance Hayes and Tracy K Smith.
The Poetry Society is proud of its associations with many of the shortlisted poets. Phoebe Power was a winner in the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award in 2009 and commended in 2010; Zaffar Kunial was a prizewinner in the National Poetry Competition 2011 and was one of four contributors to The Pity, a series of new poems commissioned by the Poetry Society in response to the centenary of the First World War. Fiona Moore, Richard Scott, Sean O’Brien, Ailbhe Darcy and Terrance Hayes have all appeared in The Poetry Review; Richard Scott’s Soho, Zaffar Kunial’s Us and Terrance Hayes’s American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassins are reviewed in the current issue.
Judges Sinéad Morrissey (Chair), Daljit Nagra and Clare Pollard chose the shortlist from 176 poetry collections submitted by publishers, 22 more than the record set last year. Sinéad Morrissey said:
“Poetry is a flourishing art form. We read 176 collections, from a plethora of poetry publishers, both new and established, and felt privileged to be able to listen in to such a lively, diverse and urgent conversation. With difficulty we chose our ten brilliant poetry books of the year – many of them debut collections – which together offer an invigorated language, confident mastery of form, and fresh, sophisticated perspectives on our uncertain times.”
The T. S. Eliot Prize Shortlist Readings will take place on 13 January 2019 in Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, London, and will be hosted once again by Ian McMillan. Find out more on the T.S. Eliot Prize website, tseliot.com
