Joe Neal wins Write by the Sea International Poetry Competition

Congratulations to Poetry Society Member Joe Neal, winner of the the Write by the Sea International Poetry Competition, announced by Colm Tóibín. Joe won with his poem ‘The Savage Sea’. Fellow Society Member Nathaniel Frankland was third with ‘Fitted Bedsheet Beahes’.

We carve to heel and catch the wind
while green-flash light parts curtain mist
and schooner judders past the rock’s grim
grin; the warning buoy lets out its whistle
sigh – annunciation of our own
significance, of others whom we mourn.

Joe received category a cash prize of €500 and a beautiful hand-crafted Write By The Sea Festival Writing Competition trophy. He has also been published on the Write By The Sea website. Nathaniel won €250.

Write By The Sea is a literary festival set in the intimate fishing village of Kilmore Quay, Co Wexford. It offers a platform for established and emerging authors to explore and explain the process of writing for keen readers and would-be writers.
