Young Poets Networkers translate at The Poetry Café

This summer, The Poetry Society’s Young Poets Network teamed up with Modern Poetry in Translation to challenge young writers worldwide to try their hand at translating poetry.

As part of this partnership YPN and MPT set up a free poetry translation workshop with MPT editor and poet Clare Pollard in The Poetry Café. On 14 August 2019 ten young poets came together to create a group translation of ‘Hazafelé megy, este’ or ‘Heading home, dusk’ by Hungarian poet Anna Szabó. They worked from a ‘bridge’ translation and notes from Szabó herself. Read the finished translation here.

She returns – looks at the face in the mirror,
but doesn’t adjust her shattered hair:
she watches those eyes. Who’s watching? Who’s there in the eye?

Find out more about the translation challenge here. If you are aged 25 or younger, there’s still time to enter – you don’t need to know any other languages to take part and the winning translation will be published in Modern Poetry in Translation. Closing 25 August 2019.
