The Poetry Café

Update: From 18th September we are open Monday-Friday from 11am. Please check the calendar for event details – we’re also open on certain Saturdays.

 The Poetry Café needs you!

Over the past twelve months we’ve been undergoing an ambitious renovation project, transforming our much-loved Café into a vibrant, welcoming space for poets and poetry lovers. Our space has undergone substantial refurbishment to the public spaces improving access, capacity and overall enjoyment. This work has been happening alongside essential work to the rest of the building and offices above and it’s nearly complete. Find out more by reading the press release.

We have been receiving donations for the project through our fundraising channels, and we’re extremely grateful for all the money that funding bodies* and individuals have given so far. We are now so close to reaching our fundraising target for completing the renovation of the Café space, which will open in just a couple of weeks – but we need your help to reach the final 10% of our target.  Donate online now.

We’re hugely excited about the changes we’ve already made, with a new lift to make the space fully accessible, increasing the capacity of the Café so we can welcome more poets and poetry lovers, and re-shaping our performance space to make sure that we offer a dramatically improved experience for audiences and performers.

However, we’re still raising money to finish the construction and introduce new fittings, including new chairs, a new sound system and a projector. Without these final elements, we can’t fully realise our ambitions for a truly transformed and transformational Poetry Café. We’re now asking for your support in helping us to reach our final fundraising target and secure the future of the Poetry Café.

About The Poetry Café

We are a quiet Covent Garden café cherished for its relaxed atmosphere and space to breathe, in Central London. Throughout the day and evening we serve a range of loose-leaf teas, gourmet Fairtrade coffees from Honest Coffee Co, and unique beverages. On offer are vegetarian soups and stews, as well as cakes and flapjacks. In the evening the atmosphere is busy and vibrant with poetry readings, slams, music, or book launches happening nearly every night.

We have stellar events ranging from weekly to occasional or one-off. For newcomers, or those wishing to read, Poetry Unplugged is London’s premier open mic session where people who have never read a poem in public can do so for the first time, or experienced poets can try out something new.

Whether you are working on a new piece of poetry or art, need space to read, study, or connect, we hope you enjoy your time at The Poetry Café. Please direct all enquiries and feedback to The Poetry Café.

The renovation of the Café and the wider redevelopment and updating of The Poetry Society’s premises has been made possible thanks to the generosity of a wide range of funders including: Arts Council England, The Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation, City Bridge Trust, Garfield Weston Foundation, The Robert Gavron Charitable Trust and SUEZ Communities Trust. We are very grateful for their support.
