Middlesex University’s Illustration degree and The Poetry Society are proud to present ‘Hidden in the Lines’, a selection of work by staff and students inspired by poems from the children’s poetry anthology Inside Out. The poems conjure up a rich ensemble of characters, lands and ideas within the imagination.

This book includes commentaries from the authors reflecting on the stories and history behind each poem. With this in mind we asked our students to look beyond the text, think beyond the pedestrian, find playful and unusual interpretations, extending their horizons to explore more thought provoking and compelling creative destinations; visual detectives hunting what might be more hidden or ambiguous.

This exhibition showcases young illustrators who have created personal and subjective responses to the poems, resulting in a diverse and vibrant exhibition. ‘Hidden in the Lines’ is the latest in a series of Poetry Society collaborations with Middlesex University staff and students.

Previous exhibitions include: ‘Poetry Re-viewed’, ‘Louts, Love & London’, ‘New Types of Shakespeare’, ‘Beginnings and Endings’, ‘Slow Show’, ‘War Stories’, ‘Happy Birthday Edward Lear’ (which toured nationwide) and ‘Haunts of the Poets’.

‘Hidden in the Lines’, presented by Middlesex University and The Poetry Society, is at The Poetry Café, 22 Betterton Street, London WC2H 9BX, 7 February – 16 March 2019. All works are for sale; proceeds go towards the students’ final degree show. Join us for the celebratory event at The Poetry Café, London, on 7 February, 6.30-8.30pm – all welcome!
